Description

Urban city crag near the Herttoniemenranta hoods. The rock is manufactured and sometimes not the best but the setting is beautiful by urban standards.

The location next to the sea is perfect. The locals gather here for evening beers and sunset sightseeing. There's the also the scenic Kipparlahti boating dock in front of the cliff.

Many of the Malmi airport planes fly above Kipparvuori. Malmi airport waypoint NOKKA is situated directly above the crag.

History

The dock was built by Öljynpuristamo Oy in 1959. Öljynpuristamo was supplying grease for Paasivaara Oy margarin factory. The tunnel below route Redrum is about 100 metes long and would end up in the factory if it still was there.

In the 1960's there was a big margarin scandal in Finland. Unilever (who owned Paasivaara Oy) got caught for using very bad quality grease for making margarin. Sometimes they used rotting animal corpses, including cats, dogs, pigs and rabbits. Paasivaara factory used this grease probably through this dock and the tunnel. Here nobody could see what they were doing. Paasivaara lost their reputation and had to stop producing their margarin Suvikulta. In Aku Ankka the factory Aku is working is know as Kattivaara.

The dock was abandoned for a couple of decades before the climbing started.
