Description

The climbing takes place in the Jonkersdam Reservation seeing most areas located close to the road and easily accessed off paths. If you happen to spot some extra large piles of dung on the roads, these are not courtesy of any super-mutated primates roaming the area, though they can be found here as well, but rather the many horses that are often ridden through the reserve.
I'm going to let you in on a little trade secret. One of the great aspects relating to the Garden is not only the short walk-in times but it's almost magical positioning; at times the pesky south-easter can blow a low moist cloud over surrounding venues like Topside and Redhill leaving behind some rather gloomy wet climbing conditions. The Garden however can at times be free from this cloud and even in the sun seemingly sheltered by some invisible force.

The Roadside boulder is essentially an eliminate boulder but can easily be climbed as normal. As you'll see I haven't star rated the eliminates, which actually implies nothing as many of the lines are actually pretty good. Don't limit yourself to the established problems and follow in the footsteps of Guy's Link-up and create some extravagant new extensions and original creations of your own. A big thanks goes out to Guy Holwill for writing up all the original lines (memory of an elephant) and holds.
You cannot miss the gigantic UFO boulder - it's the one with an enormous roof protruding over the hilltop resembling a crash-landed UFO. The Zenomorph project remains a three star project on the left corner of the big steep face, probably because it's largely unfamiliar to a majority of local climbers.
Scattered up and down a shallow gully just above the Roadside boulder are the Broncobuster Boulders. It's the most populated of the areas serving as a fine introduction to the Garden. I would advise heading to the Broncobuster boulder itself out back as its the main attraction and then move on to any other surrounding problems from there. The big block has been severely violated featuring over 20 lines in the 3 - 7b range.
Looking for a hard project… the undefeated Superhero roof fights through 80 degrees of slopey underclings and bad edges - a tough line and good challenge for anyone climbing the grade.
For those looking to open some lines there are plenty of quality lines for the taking at The Mansion, on the Wild West and UFO boulders.

ASPECT AND CONDITIONS
There are essentially six main areas at Boulder Garden. Roadside Boulder, Roswell, Broncobuster Boulders, Adriatic Area, Private Zoo and Wild West. See ACCESS for specific details on how to get to the areas.

Roadside Boulder
Afternoon shade. This is definitely an afternoon boulder during the summer months as it can get quite hot early in the day, but is just what you're looking for on a frosty winter morning.

Roswell
Most of the problems enjoy morning and all day shade apart from the front face of the UFO boulder which comes into full shade around 1:00 pm.

Broncobuster Boulders
Afternoon shade for most problems, though you will find morning shade on the left side of the Broncobuster boulder.

Adriatic Area
Most of the boulders receive morning shade apart from the Adriatic boulder which has afternoon shade, and The Mansion boulder receiving all-day shade.

Private Zoo
The Pale Male boulder receives afternoon shade while the Superhero roof enjoys all-day shade.

Wild West
Morning shade, though most of the good problems enjoy all day shade.

History

The roadside boulders have actually been visited since the late 80's even though many climbers are unfamiliar with them. Just a two minute walk off the highway these boulders are convenient if time is a factor and only have a few hours to spare. Which is why the 'ol sandbagged eliminate block played host to many a gathering and late night training session by Guy Holwill and co. in days gone by, illuminated by a disconnected set of headlights and car battery! However nothing remains constant and with the introduction of indoor walls and discovery of many new urban areas these boulders have been ignored by climbers.
The Adriatic was one of the few 7c+'s opened during the 90's by Adrian Kohler and remains a tough proposition today. Before jumping on anything at this area though you first need to attain a 'right of passage' through Poetry in Motion.
We discovered the area in 2007 as we passed it every time we done the winding drive to Redhill. Venturing out a little further from the roadside boulders we discovered there were still lines to be found beyond the highway on and around the rolling hills like Broncobuster and the Superhero boulders.

Boulder Garden

The area is access sensitive!

RULES
Please be polite around the horse riders. Some animals get quite jittery around large bouldering pads. Just stand to the side of the path and let them pass. You will find the riders to be very pleasant and we don't want to form a hostile relationship with them.

DRIVE
From Cape Town get onto the M3. Follow this for around 17km all the way to the end and turn right onto Steenberg Road (M42). Drive for about 1.5km taking the second left onto Ou Kaapseweg (M64). Continue on this road (becomes the M6 Glencairn Expressway at the second set of robots) for 14km until you reach the Jonkersdam Parking Area on the right at the top of a hill.

APPROACH: 2 - 18 minutes
Click on the MAP and you will find Trails displayed on the map in different colours leading to some of the main areas. Zoom in for a closer look.
In addition to this click on a boulder called "Paths Map". It has all the paths, path numbers and the areas laid out. Once you have that you will easily be able to follow the walk-in instructions given below to the main areas. There are essentially six main areas at Boulder Garden. Roadside, Roswell, Broncobuster Boulders, Adriatic Area, Private Zoo and Wild West.

Roadside - 2 minutes
From the parking simply follow 1 and branch off left, where the path heads right, towards the two obvious boulders 140m just beyond the parking.

Roswell - 5 minutes
From the parking take 1 onto 2. Follow this and take 3 up left. To get to the large UFO boulder, head up the hill on a climbers path starting just left of a rock close to the path, continuing up and then diagonally left near the top.

Broncobuster Boulders - 10 minutes
From the parking take 1 onto 2, and then turn left up along 3. Continue up for 3 minutes or so to find the Snake Charmer boulder at a twist in the path. Continue on to reach the very obvious Broncobuster boulder down to the right.

Adriatic Area - 10 minutes
Take 1 onto 2. Continue on for about 7 minutes and follow 4 down the slope for about 3 minutes to find the obvious long Poetry in Motion boulder on the left.

Private Zoo - 14 minutes
Take 1 onto 2. Continue along the track and take a sandy footpath (5) on the left. Follow this for about 50m until in line with the pale coloured Pale Male boulder up on the left. Head towards the boulders.

Wild West - 18 minutes
Follow 1 onto 2. Continue on the track, after a while you will spot the very obvious roof of the Wild Wild West boulder as the road turns left. The remainder of the boulders are spread out on the south side of the road up on the slopes. To reach them continue on 2 a little and follow an old climbers path through the bush to the boulders.
