Description

Hiisikallio is a nice addition to the rope climbing crags close to the capital, located in Nummela at the south edge of the Hiidenvesi lake. The crag can be reached in about 40 minutes from Helsinki and has a easy 3 minute approach and plenty of parking space.

The cliff is east and north-facing, meaning it's in the shade most of the day. The downside of that is that it's not the fastest crag to dry after the winter. During the summer though, you can find dry routes 8-12 hours after rain has ended.

The crag is located on the land of Vuorelan koulukoti, and the development of the crag has been done with the helpful support of Vuorela. Vuorelan koulukoti is a state-run home-school for troubled youngsters. Do not approach the koulukoti and never drive onto Vuorelantie.

The cliff ranges in height from 10 meters to 25 meters, and is mostly slabby, with vertical sections and a couple of roofs. The rock quality is mostly of good high-friction granite, with lots of small features such as edges and micro-pockets as well as jugs and ledges. As is typical for many crags in Finland, routes are cruxy, with sections of easier climbing with good rests in between cruxes. Most routes are bolted, but there are also a few cracks to cater for the tradsters. All routes are equipped with bolted anchors and there are also rappel anchors up on the top to facilitate access to harder to reach top anchors. The top can be reached from either side of the crag as well as between sectors 1 and 2. There's a training anchor at eye-height, located between the routes Pikku Myy and Ope mä en osaa at sector 2.

There are several great quality sandy beaches close to the parking spot. The nearest one is right after new black house, and the next one is a few 100 meters further away. The nearest official beach is at the opposite side of bay. There is a K-Market in the village, 2 km before reaching the parking.

The crag was developed during 2023 and the spring 2024 and the development continues. There are closed projects on most sectors, most of which are marked on 27 Crags. Please be in contact with Jonas Broo (whatsapp 0405217093) in case you want to open any new routes.

History

The crag has been discovered by a few different parties, with the first route "Ensimmäinen" climbed way back in 1985 by Pasi Vihavainen. A small group of climbers did some cleaning in 2014 and Jouni Turunen opened a trad line which he named "Elämän kevät". The current development, however, started when Jonas Broo rediscovered the cliff, and agreed with Senaatti-kiinteistöt on the development of the crag. Jan Juslen of SKIL did the bolting, while Jukka Sundberg was the main tree feller. Santeri Vidal and others spent countless hours brushing lines and clearing debris.

The first route of the current development of the crag was Kovien Tyttöjen Koulu, named in respect for the good cooperation with Vuorelan koulukoti.

Hiisikallio

The area is access sensitive!

Only park at the designated parking spots (the closest parking has room for over 10 well parked cars) and approach the crag from those parking spots. Do not wander past the crag towards Vuorelan koulukoti. Do not approach the koulukoti and never drive onto Vuorelantie. Cars are not to be parked at the corner of Vuorelantie and Vesikansantie.

The small shelter with a campfire near the footpath is on private land and is not for public use so please do not go there.

As always, keep the noise down, don't leave trash and pick up trash that you find.
