Description

GENERAL INFO:
Uusmäki is a crag located in the middle of a forest between Uusmäki and Koivuvaara. It comprises of five modestly sized boulders. Despite their short length, some routes offer considerable challenge. The rock quality varies from satisfactory to rough, with generally secure landings except for a few exceptions. Well-maintained paths crisscross the forest, offering ease of navigation. Uusmäki is nice to climb at during the summer due to almost all of the sectors having a lot of shade. The forest itself is quite beautiful, especially the north part of it.

The climbing offered by Uusmäki ranges from really easy slabs fit for children to short, to a few powerful overhanging problems. There should be something for almost everyone, as there are a some unclimbed projects up for grabs too.

However, it's important to note that alternatives such as Lintukallio offer superior climbing experiences. Additionally, visitors should be wary of mosquitoes and ticks, and prepare for longer approaches between sectors. Certain areas may have rock quality akin to a cheese grater.

ABOUT SECTORS:

Suffering: Among the initial boulders developed, Suffering presents routes ranging from 5 to 6B, predominantly featuring vertical or overhanging challenges. Though the rock quality varies, landings are generally secure, except on the overhanging side.

Agony: Offering a mix of easy slabs and demanding sit starts, Agony boasts decent rock quality and excellent landings.

The Good: Characterized by decent rock quality and a range of problems suitable for children to 6a climbers, The Good is relatively short in height with favorable landings.

The Ugly: A small boulder with subpar rock quality situated near a paintball/airsoft arena, requiring caution during visiting.

The New Kid In Town: The latest addition to Uusmäki's boulder lineup, this sector features mostly decent landings and sharpish rock, offering routes suitable for children and beginners.

The New Kid In Town is the newest addition of boulders in the Uusmäki roster. Mostly decent landings, sharpish rock and not far from the other good ones! The routes here are easy slabs or vertical climbs, with the grades ranging from 3-5+. Great sector to come to with your kids!

Although three more boulders were initially considered for development, their poor rock quality led to their exclusion.

If you visit only a few sectors, I would suggest The Good, Suffering and Agony. They offer the most interesting problems and best rock quality.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:
Beyond bouldering, Uusmäki offers a plethora of recreational activities. Mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy diverse trails with varying terrains and elevations. The forest also provides an ideal setting for mushroom hunting and berry picking, with an abundance of gourmet mushrooms and blueberries, along with cranberries. Geocaching opportunities further enhance the outdoor experience. Nearby Sissos Areena provides options for paintball and airsoft, offering an alternative recreational pursuit for visitors.

History

Scouted by Asikainen and Virtala in april of 2023. Development began in june of 2023, with Asikainen and Joe Carpark setting a few routes after the team published Haltiavuori.

As development in Haltiavuori was more or less complete, Asikainen and Virtala came back on 6.8 and developed almost the entirety of the "Agony" boulder. Development of "The Good" boulder was completed on 11.8. On the same day, "The Bad" boulder was cleaned up and a few routes were added.

On 12.8, Asikainen returned on their lonesome, developed a few more routes on "The Bad", until ultimately deciding it was too bad to continue development on (topos were removed). The "Agony" boulder was finished and development on "Suffering" was brought ahead by leaps and bounds. On the same day, the boulder "The New Kid In Town" was discovered.

Some GPS trails have been recorded throughout development, but a bulk was added on 16.8.

On 25.10 the crag was set to be published, as the team decided not to develop the last few sectors any further, for the rock quality is abhorrent. They were later removed from the topos, as the rock quality was just that bad.
