📚 Crag X is also covered in the guidebook "Arctic Circle Bouldering" from Nov. 2019.
Crag X is a medium sized area located in the south west corner of Straumøya south of Bodø. It is scenically located on a hill below the cliffs of Ranvfloget where you have great views west and north towards the ocean and Bodø. The climbing is mostly on freestanding boulders. The rock quality varies from firm to a little chossy and flaky, but presents some nice features and varied types of holds. Most of the lines are vertical to steep overhanging. The landings are generally good and flat and you can get by with one or two pads on most boulders.
👶 Most of the crag is very child friendly though you can't bring a stroller. But it's safe and easy for children to play around.
Roumor has it that Torgier Kjus knew about the blocks here already around 2000 but aparrently nothing was developed at that point. The first known development started in 2008 by Geir Ove Amundsen who went there on several trip over the following two years but he didn't document anything so which lines he actually put up at that time is a bit hazy. It was then quiet for several years until Sten Stenkjær heard of the possibilities and put up several new lines during the years of 2015-16 including the classic Blockbuster. The next boom in development came in 2018-2020 when Rasmus Bølling went there on several solo trips to ducument what had been done so far and also to establish several new boulder problems including the Bodø classic 'Endelig Elg' and several harder lines. Crag X quickly bacame one of the go-to spots for an evening or weekend session and remains so today with several must do test pieces of all grades. During 2020 the steep clifs of Ravnfloget looming above the boulders also saw development after Rasmus had pushed Andreas Grumstad and Ole Dovland for a few years to go and chceck it out until they finally did. ANd many hard sports routes was quickly established, including Bodø's hardest sports route that ticks in around 8b+. So don't foget to bring your harnes and rope aswell as pads.
