No special access issues
Chironico is a village situated in the north of the province (Kanton) Ticino (Tessin) of Switzerland.
You can find all the parkings on the map view. Make sure to navigate to the correct one.
You can walk between all the zones on foot too, but the distances are rather big.
Searching for "Chironico boulder" on google maps will bring you to the higher "Nivo parking".
As in every place, be respectful, don't litter, only park where allowed,... The lower 2 Parkings near the village of Nivo have toilets and staying overnight in a van is tolerated. Be respectful so we can enjoy this for many years to come.
The boulders can be found in four main zones with separate parkings and approaches.
Nivo:
The Northernmost zone which can be reached from the village of Nivo
Centrale:
The central zone which can be reached the easiest from the village of Chironico
Altirolo:
Lower zones of Centrale, parking is easier low down, near the village Altirolo. This will ease the approach.
Schattental:
Lower zone in the forest and river which can be reached by parking under the highway bridge at "via Ticinetto".
General Arrival:
When coming from the North, the access to Ticino is through the Gotthard tunnel or pass (usually open from June to October). Once exiting the tunnel in Airolo, stay on the highway for another 20km and take exit 43-Faido. Drive direction SE on the secondary road (road 2). Once passed Lavorgo, take a right turn over the river and start driving up the switchbacks under the highway bridge (For Centrale and Nivo).
To go to Schattental, keep driving south on road two until two large switchbacks bring you down lower. Turn right onto "Alla Monda" 1km after the switchbacks. Follow the road back north (one right turn), pass under the railway (close the fence for the hoses) and park under the big highway bridge.
For Altirolo: Drive even more south on road 2, only turn right and cross the river in Giornico. Cross the railway and drive north on via Altirolo. Park at the boom.
Sectors:
Approach paths are marked on the map and generally quite clear.
Best zones for families are the Centrale and most of the blocks in the Nivo areas.
