The Classroom - Newlands Forest

The area is access sensitive!

Access: From my understanding (the regulations seem to change depending on who you speak too) there are NO current restrictions on bouldering in Newlands Forest, but you will need an Activity Permit when Sport Climbing.

PARKING: Main Entrance Parking for Newlands Forest (Fire Station)
From Cape Town, get onto the N2 and then M3. Continue on the M3 for about 3.6km until you see the 'Newlands Fire Base' sign on the right situated on the middle barrier of the freeway. Follow this into the parking area beneath the trees.

Note: Click on a boulder named "The Classroom - Paths Map & Topo". This will bring up a picture of the paths and landmarks that are mentioned in the approach description below. With all the tree cover it is difficult to draw in a TRAIL on the MAP, however we did include a TRAIL on the MAP but it is merely a rough guide to give you an idea of the location you are headed. Please note that the Paths Map is not perfect and there will be minor mistakes here and there, which will be corrected over time.

APPROACH: 35 minutes
From the parking, walk up a tar road (1) turn left at the top and follow this for 400m, it turns into a dirt track which goes up a hill. Take the right fork and follow this for 500m. Again take the right fork and down the hill, over the river and take the first turn left up next to the river. Follow the trails that lead up on the right side of the river. The boulder are just off the left side of the path 30m before it reaches the river.
