Description

Tulikallio of Villinki is a picturesque summertime kayaking and boating destination close to Helsinki city, and a beautiful addition to Helsinki's seaside climbing. The cliff face rises almost vertically from the sparkling seas to the skies. The rock of Villinki is beautiful, sea-shaped granite, soft and round.

Because the water in front of the cliff is relatively shallow and is riddled with rocks, DWS is out of the question. During the wintertime it's possible to climb in Villinki on a sunny day. The crag is baking in the sun and the rock can be surprisingly warm. The seepage from the snow is low especially on the left sector routes.

History

The name Tulikallio (or Kasaberget as the locals call it) refers to old sea navigation tradition with bonfire signalling.

First known ascents are from the 1990's by Max Helander & co. It's also possible someone has climbed here before this but there are no pitons or other traces of it. Because of knowledge being lost, the current lines and their names and first ascentionists are from the modern time of record keeping.

Villinki

Climbing has been limited!

Both Villinki and the neighboring Pukkiluoto are busy summer islands. All noices travel long distance on water so keep your volume down. If the people in the neighboring estates are at home climbing should be avoided. Camping or making fire is strictly not allowed!

In summertime it's best not to dock on private land. The locals prefer to keep their things private. There are three possible docking options on public city owned land, however. From these spots Tulikallio can be reached on foot.

Be careful with the hidden rocks under the water surface. The docking sites described are designed for canoe and are not suitable for big boats.

As of 2020, a rowing boat can be rented (20€/4h) from Karjalaisten kesäkoti (Villa Salmela, open: Wed-Sun 12-19:00).
