Description

Varlaam Bouldering Area – Buzău, Romania

Varlaam is a compact sandstone bouldering area located in the Buzău Mountains, close to the well-known Brătilești Bouldering zone. The sector sits right next to the water, offering a calm feeling, especially on quiet days.

The rock is sandstone, similar in style and texture to Brătilești, with technical movement, slopers, crimps, and lines that reward good footwork and body positioning. The boulders are spread along the riverbank, making the area scenic and pleasant, especially in spring and autumn.

Access is easy – you can reach the boulders without long approaches, and most landings are manageable with proper pad placement. Because the area is close to the river, humidity can sometimes be an issue, especially after rain or during colder periods. However, when conditions are right, the rock dries surprisingly well.

As with many areas, occasional trash may appear, unfortunately left behind by people from the surrounding villages.

The area is near a dirt road so the access it is really easy from the car, but also there might be some dust and noise form passing cars.

Varlaam is a great option for those looking to explore Romanian sandstone bouldering, combine climbing with nature, and discover a alternatives near Brătilești. A brush, a bit of patience with conditions, and some finger strength will go a long way here.

History

The area began to be developed for climbing around 2012, when the first lines were cleaned and climbed. After a period of lower activity, the area was re-cleaned and revived in 2023 through the efforts of the Bucharest climbing community. Even today, the area still holds significant potential, with many untouched boulders and unclimbed lines waiting to be discovered and developed.
