Varlaam is a roadside sandstone bouldering area located directly along the road and next to the river, near the village of Gura Teghii in the Buzău Mountains. You can park the car right next to the boulders, making access extremely easy and convenient.

Most of the boulders are found on the right side of the road, close to the water, with additional problems higher up the slope on the left side, uphill from the road. The rock quality is good, with solid sandstone and nice, well-shaped lines that make the climbing enjoyable and varied.

Because the area is next to the road, cars occasionally pass by, bringing some noise and dust. Unfortunately, from time to time, local trash may appear in the ravine, which takes away from the atmosphere. Despite this, the boulders themselves are good, the lines are attractive, and when conditions are right, it can be a really pleasant place to climb.

The proximity to the river means that humidity can sometimes affect conditions, but there are days when the rock feels great and offers excellent friction. Varlaam is best visited with a flexible mindset, a brush, and respect for the place—taking care to leave it cleaner than you found it.
