Description

Martinkylän Högberg is a small bouldering crag with a few smallish sectors. The area does have a lot more potential though, especially the south side of Akita. It sadly is quite mossy, but cleaning the walls would reveal beautiful and difficult slab/vert highballs. Take a brush with you if that's your jam!

The main sector, Akita is quite a high ball and contains 3 hard to very hard routes between 6C+ and 7C+, as well as an easier 6A. The rock type is this beautiful red and black gneiss with intricate, curvy folds. Akita is in the shade, which results in cool climbing, especially in the morning as it is west facing. Sadly, the shape of Akita makes it gather quite a lot of moss in a short while, and thus takes a bit longer to dry.

The 2Faces boulder sector contains four routes from grades 4-6A. The four routes are powerful one movers with great holds. The rock type here is this beautiful smooth schistose metamorphic rock. This rock is clean, albeit heavily graffited. The paint doesn't negatively affect the climbing experience, as holds are great. This block is also under no shade, which makes it dry quickly.

Mumu and Halkopaini are two new sectors with a few very easy routes. Mumu has more potential for easy routes for children. The rock type here is pretty basic granite, but isn't sharp like most granite is. The two sectors have some shade coverage, and are still quite dirty from a lack of a proper brushing.

The hardest route at the crag, Akita, 7C+ is described by some as the best boulder in Vantaa. If you climb hard stuff, it is a must to have on your ticklist!

History

Vantaanlaakso was first discovered by Sauli Kiema in 2010 when the first route here, Duello 6C+ was climbed. Next year, the crag's absolute classic Akita 7C+ was climbed, also by Sauli Kiema. Minikolmonen was found and the three routes on it were developed by Ville Kontinen in 2012. After this time only two new routes were developed on the main sector. Lazy Jungle 6A by Mikko Pulli in 2015 and Hell Knight 7A by Markus Sojakka in 2022.

The two original sectors used to be on different topos, but were merged as they were both free topos and in each other's vicinity. In May of 2025 the association for Vantaa's Outdoor Climbing VUK ry began developing efforts to update multiple topos in the Vantaa area to a higher quality to upgrade the topos to premium. This is done to have Vantaa perceived as a better climbing destination/city as it's current reputation suggests. Two new sectors were added, along with fout new FA's for easy routes.
