Description

Pihlajisto crag is semi urban new, but actually old bouldering location with idyllic view from the hill top that is located near Savela park. This new addition to Helsinki outdoor climbing has a lots of slab walls, vertical walls and consist routes for all ranges all the way from beginners to advanced climbers.

Fast and easy access to Pihlajisto sectors are suitable especially families with baby carriage. Walk time from parking area varies from 3 minutes to 10 minutes depending on the sector you plan to go. As the climbing walls are located next to gravel walkway and near tall buildings, which means there is moderate amount of traffic, so bear mind not to scream too much. Yes, pretty thick coming from me. :P

Pihlajisto crag consist unusual high amount of slabs and sloper routes with mantel topouts, which makes it ideal place to train and polish your technique for your next Fontainebleau trip. Most of the routes are not that high and have a good landing.

All the sectors are in the shade all day long so this area is suitable for even summer time climbing. Sectors dries after rain around 2-10 hours, depending on the wall and amount of moss, but some parts of the walls can trickle long time after rain.

History

Not much is known about Savela crag history except that at least Anton Johansson with his buddies has opened couple of obvious lines in the main wall sometime around 2005. As far as I know, all the smaller walls have been left untouched.

Pihlajisto

Climbing has been limited!

Confirmed from SKIL - access:
Saa kiivetä, mutta ei saa poistaa kasvillisuutta, muuttaa maaperää eikä asentaa ankkureita! Eli sammaleet pitää jättää paikoilleen!

It is allowed to climb, but not allowed to remove vegetation, modify landings or attach anchors! Leave the moss be!

The access situation in Pihlajisto is sensitive. There was a meeting in fall 2019 with Helsinki city and National Climbing Association (SKIL ry) regarding outdoor climbing activities around Helsinki area. The negotiations are currently ongoing and more information will become available later.
