A city situated in the very heart of the Istrian peninsula is especially famous for its Pazin pit (Pazinska jama) – the underground stream of the river Fojba above which lies a medieval citadel. Picturesque ambiance was an inspiration to Jules Verne while he was writing his novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Although the pit itself is a characteristic of a typically karstic terrain, there are no higher rocks in the vicinity of Pazin, except in the area surrounding the pit. Nevertheless, during 1997 and 1998, along the bed of the river Pazinčica, local climbers started equipping two smaller climbing sites (Lido and Zarečki krov). There are also some routes in Pazinska jama itself which is recently very popular. Zarečki krov is an extremely beautiful site located on the river next to the picturesque waterfall. What makes it even more interesting is a big semicave located behind the waterfall. Quite a number of difficult and attractive routes have been equipped recently in the very cave roof, mostly interesting to high level climbers.
Note: During winter, a large waterfall flows over the roof of the cave, and in Zarečki krov the foot of sectors could be flooded or muddy. The most adequate period for climbing in all sectors is from June to September.
Accommodation: There are no campsites in the vicinity. Private accomodation in Pazin.
