Description

Sector Patsos is located in the dramatic Patsos Gorge, a wild and scenic canyon surrounded by steep rock walls and flowing water.
Currently, there are around 23 established routes in the main sector, along with a handful of scattered lines throughout the gorge and a few unfinished projects. Although it is a relatively small sector, the quality and variety of climbing are outstanding. The routes offer a wide range of styles, holds, grades, and wall angles, making it an excellent destination for diverse climbing experiences.
The main crag receives sun in the morning and, depending on the season, shade from late morning onwards.
Parking for vans is possible at the gorge parking area. However, due to the high humidity from the river and cooler temperatures at the bottom of the canyon, it is recommended to find a higher and drier spot for overnight stays.

History

Climbing in Patsos Gorge is a relatively recent development compared to other Cretan areas. While the gorge has long been known to hikers and locals for the chapel of Agios Antonios and its lush canyon setting, sport climbing only began to develop here in the 2000s.
Local climbers from Rethymno and Heraklion were among the first to explore the steep limestone walls of the gorge. The first routes were bolted in what is now known as the main sector.
