Description

MARJAN - the climbing area situated in the center of the Split. On the south side of the Marjan peninsula the cliffs are facing island of Solta and peninsula Ciovo, as well as many of city beaches below limestone cliffs. Marjan hill is a protected area and there are many restrictions you have to respect.
Marjan crag is located inside of a well kept state park and runs along the top of the hill for 500m to a routes high up to 15-30m. It is a home crag for climbers from Split who are very proud to have such a great climbing crag in the middle of the town, with such a rich history.
For Croatian climbers Marjan crag is truly the cradle of sport climbing. Marjan has approximately 80 routes (ranges 4c-8a), mostly slabs and vertical routes and especially popular for many sunny days throughout whole year. Type of the rock is a limestone. It is very safe climbing crag, bolted friendly, with the best materials. The guys from Marulianus club are taking care of this beauty. The best season for climbing on Marjan is a winter season, but spring and especially fall are also very good periods. It is possible to climb in a summer time too but only if you like temperatures from +35C and higher (we don’t recommend it).
Note: sunset a Marjan is a picture you will never forget!

History

This crag IS the cradle of our sport in Croatia. Long time ago in 1986. local climbers organized open competition, Marjan 86, tried to copy Italy 1985. Not only this fact make this crag special. There are caves where people were hidden from Turkish invasion in 1551 today visible and we call it eremitaze.
First climbing guidebook from here was published in 1986.
It is so amazing to spend time here, even just a walk. This place for locals is truly their sanctuary from daily problems and ordinary life.
Worth visiting for sure!
