The crag is also used by Vantaan Moottorikerho as a training ground for enduro. This means that sometimes, some sectors are off limits for climbing (Kasvot, Otter Space & Cock Bloc). Hanskallio is a great new crag located in the northern parts of Vantaa. It is the only place in the whole area of Vantaa with this specific rock type, that being migmatite paragneiss. At most sectors the rock quality is quite phenomenal to climb on, with the other sectors being mediocre rock quality-wise.

The climbing at Hanskallio is quite varied - there are a ton of easy lowballs fit for beginners to some very hard looking overhanging lines that are still projects! There are powerful overhanging problems to very technical and spooky slabs.

Most sectors have great shade and can be climbed comfortably during the warmer summer months- the exceptions being Slope, Slobad and Cock Bloc. Landings are mostly safe, but the ruggedness of the terrain requires climbers to be vigilant while moving in the area - otherwise it is very easy to trip here.

History

Hanskallio and it's bouldering potential were discovered in late august of 2023 on a scouting trip by Asikainen and Carpark. The area piqued the interest of Asikainen after a gruelling amount of studying of Digital Elevation Models, topographical maps and GTK's "Bedrock of Finland" -material.

Developing began during early September of 2023, but continued in the spring of 2025 after the official formation of Vantaan Ulkokiipeilijät ry. The development was quickly tackled with group effort and was finished by the end of June.

VUK ry held a cup style outdoors climbing competition right here in Hanskallio - it was held for ~2 months, from the publishing of the crag until the end of August. Aleksi Koponen won the competition by absolutely SMASHING the other competitors with topping 29/33 of the competition boulders, scoring a whopping 22 437 points. They won a quality brush, a bag of chalk and the title "Master of Hanskallio" for their troubles!

Hanskallio

The area is access sensitive!

Remember that the area is used by VMK as a training/competition ground for Enduro driving. Give space for the drivers, and don't be stupid. Sometimes, due to traffic, some sectors will be off limits for climbing. Luckily, most sectors will still be climbable at. You can be in contact with VMK through email, at enduro@vantaanmoottorikerho.fi

Even though Hanskallio is in the middle of nowhere at the edge of Vantaa it can be reached in an hour from the main railway station of Helsinki with public transportation and in 50 minutes by car.

For the people traveling here by car, there is a parking spot only 500 meters away from the main bouldering area.

If you want to reach the crag by public transportation, you can by taking either the bus 576 (Tikkurila-Aviapolis-Kivistö-Seutula) or 447 (Kivistö-Kesäkylä) and get off at the stop 'Hanskallio'. The stop is right next to the main bouldering area. Tikkurila, Aviapolis and Kivistö are easily reachable by train.
