Calling this area “spectacular” would be an understatement. Two sectors, two completely different styles, two worlds waiting to be explored.

The Grotta dell'Arenauta is one of the steepest and most impressive climbing walls in southern Italy. It’s visually stunning — even if you're not climbing at high grades, it’s worth stopping by just to take it all in. Inside the cave, legendary lines like Grandi Gesti and L'Arenauta (9b by Stefano Ghisolfi) draw climbers from across the country. The cave is bathed in sunlight, and its reddish rock formations seem almost alive — a setting that feels surreal.

On the other side, Approdo dei Proci offers a completely different vibe: a band of white, yellow, and red rock with easier and mid-grade climbs. Nothing extreme here, just pure enjoyment in an incredible setting where the sea glows blue and the sand keeps you company at the base. Unfortunately is not possible to climb, is dangerous

A pale rock band with its base in the sand, suitable for both beginners and intermediate climbers.
The climbing is mostly vertical, slightly overhanging, technical, with elusive holds. Really beautiful. Dangerous do not climb

•Grotta dell'Arenauta
A true gem of the area — a massive cave that hosts extremely difficult routes.
Climbing here isn’t for everyone: it’s selective, requires great endurance, and demands full mental focus.

Dire che questa zona è spettacolare è riduttivo. Due settori, due stili completamente diversi, due mondi da esplorare.

La Grotta dell'Arenauta è una delle pareti più strapiombanti e impressionanti del sud Italia. È un colpo d’occhio incredibile — anche se non si scala su gradi alti, vale la pena passarci solo per ammirarla. All'interno ci sono vie leggendarie come Grandi Gesti e L'Arenauta (9b di Stefano Ghisolfi) che attirano climber da tutto il paese. La grotta è costantemente illuminata dal sole e le sue formazioni rocciose rossastre sembrano prendere vita — un ambiente quasi irreale.

Dall’altra parte, Approdo dei Proci offre un’atmosfera completamente diversa: una fascia di roccia biancastra, giallastra e rossa con vie facili e di media difficoltà. Niente di estremo, solo puro divertimento in uno scenario mozzafiato, dove il blu del mare domina e la sabbia ti fa compagnia alla base. Sfortunatamente non si puo scalare, è pericoloso.

Una barra rocciosa biancastra con i piedi nella sabbia. permette di far scalare principianti e intermedi.
Un'arrampicata prevalentemente verticale, leggermente strapiombante, tecnica, su prese sfuggenti. molto bello. Non scalare, pericoloso.

Una gemma nella zona d’Italia, un antro enorme che racchiude vie di estrema difficoltà una scalata non per tutti, una scalata selettiva, di grande resistenza dove la concentrazione mentale è essenziale.

The history of the Arenauta beach is long and still only partially documented, but a few key milestones have made it a landmark in Italian climbing.
First discovered by Federico Disebin the '90.
In 2009, Gianluca Daniele made the first ascent of Grandi Gesti, a line initially graded 9a. This marked a major moment for sport climbing in southern Italy.
In 2017 Adam Ondra freed "La Teoria del Gesto" 9a.
Another significant chapter came in 2021, when Stefano Ghisolfi freed a long-standing project bolted by Giuliano Tarquini, proposing it as one of the first 9b routes in Italy: L’Arenauta. It’s one of the hardest climbs in the world and quickly drew international attention.
Although there’s little space left for new lines, many linkups between existing routes remain possible — meaning the story of the Grotta dell’Arenauta is far from over.

La storia della spiaggia dell'Arenauta è lunga e in parte ancora poco documentata, ma ci sono alcuni exploit che l'hanno resa celebre.
Scoperto da Federico Diseb nel '90.
Nel 2009, Gianluca Daniele libera Grandi Gesti, inizialmente un progetto valutato 9a. Questo segna un momento importante per l'arrampicata sportiva nel Sud Italia.
Nel 2017 Adam Ondra libera "La Teoria del Gesto" 9a.
Un altro capitolo significativo si scrive nel 2021, quando Stefano Ghisolfi libera un vecchio progetto chiodato da Giuliano Tarquini, proponendolo come uno dei primi 9b in Italia: L’Arenauta. Si tratta di una delle vie più difficili al mondo, che ha attirato l'attenzione della scena internazionale.
Nonostante lo spazio per nuove vie sia ormai quasi esaurito, i collegamenti tra le linee esistenti sono ancora tanti, e la storia della Grotta dell'Arenauta è tutt’altro che conclusa.
