Description

Welcome to Foppiano Boulder, a true gem of Ossola bouldering. This place will capture you with its quiet magic and its timeless atmosphere.

Get ready to enter the legendary “Witches’ Forest”, a dense and atmospheric wood of beech and spruce trees at 1217 m above sea level, right at the foot of Monte Cistella, the symbolic peak of the whole Ossola Valley.

This area is not just a place to climb. It’s a vertical paradise with an incredible 1064 mapped boulders, spread across 22 sectors.
These numbers place Foppiano among the top four bouldering areas in Italy for total number of problems, and without a doubt the first for density of climbs per surface area.
The rock is a beautiful grey gneiss full of crimps and cracks, with medium abrasiveness that lets you climb for hours without destroying your skin too quickly.

The boulders of Foppiano are tall and imposing, with lines often reaching 6 or 7 meters, like the famous Sass Fendù, Bad Religion, or the Fessure sector.
Their geological origin is unique: they are not morainic blocks, but the result of a Deep-Seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DGPV), an ancient and extremely slow landslide that broke the original bedrock into a constellation of sharp-edged blocks now covering the slope like a precious stone blanket.

The climbing offer is huge and inclusive, following an “open source” philosophy that welcomes every type of climber.
Kids and anyone who prefers staying close to the ground will enjoy the “Sassi Kids”, a selection of comfortable, low-height boulders.
For pro climbers, the forest hides extreme challenges that shaped recent history, including hard classics up to 8th grade, like Disincanto, proposed at 8B+.

The mountain climate allows long climbing seasons. April and October are the golden months, with perfect temperatures and incredible grip.
If you’re looking for total relaxation, June, July and August are ideal to escape the heat and enjoy cool evening sessions under the trees.
Foppiano is a promise of authenticity and passion, a refuge where every breath becomes part of an emotion that stays with you.

Norms and Restrictions
To protect the area and maintain good relations with the local community, please follow these rules:

🏕️ Camping
Wild camping is theoretically forbidden in Piemonte, but the rule does not apply to stays under 48 hours.
If you want to pitch a tent, use the shaded clearings to the right of the big meadow.

🔥 Fires
Lighting fires in the forest or meadows is strictly forbidden.
To cook, use only the grills available in the picnic area.

🚗 Circulation
Cars are not allowed on the flat meadow of the picnic area, which must remain a safe play zone for children.
Always respect private land and avoid crossing the big meadow when the grass is tall.

🌿 Environment and Hygiene
Never leave trash; use the bins in the picnic area or in front of the hotel.
For toilet needs, use the dedicated WC or, if you are in the forest, make sure to fully cover everything.

🪨 Rock Ethics
Do not dig or “improve” existing holds.
Metal brushes are allowed only to remove moss from new boulders; for already cleaned problems, use only soft brushes to avoid damaging the rock.

🧗 Chalk and Respect
Always remove chalk marks after climbing.
Limit night sessions to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Attention: if the rock is wet after rain, the risk of breaking holds is much higher.

History

The history of bouldering in Foppiano begins in the summer of 1999, when Andrea Aleotti and Elisa Fantonetti, on their way to Monte Cistella, discovered this “garden of stones”.

The first problems appeared in the Mezzaluna and Assalto Frontale sectors, soon followed by historic gems like Bad Religion. Between 2002 and 2007, Dario Rota and Lorenzo Dehò started a second phase of development, recognizing the huge potential of the area.

A decisive turning point came in 2011–2012 with the return of Luca Cendou and the collaboration of Graziano “Il Druido” Biancossi. In just one year, they cleaned 80 boulders and opened 200 lines, creating iconic sectors such as Sass Fendù and the Tavoliere. In 2012, the first “Ouverture” gathering attracted more than 250 participants, leading to 40 new lines and the birth of sectors like Sass Giana and Canyon.

The first printed guidebook was published in 2013.

In the following years (2015–2019), the area continued to grow with new sectors such as Slurp, Torototela and the large Terra di Mezzo. In 2024, after commercial logging operations, the community organized the “Foppiano Cleanup” event to restore the trails and the beauty of the forest.
Recent history includes the creation of many 8th-grade lines and the publication, in 2026, of the new updated guidebook with more than 1,000 boulders.
