Description

Chaos, is an impressive natural sinkhole located in the southern part of Attika, near the historic town of Lavrio. The sinkhole is the result of ground collapsing due to extensive underground mining and/or karstic dissolution.

As far as climbing is concerned, routes in Chaos are few but of exceptional quality and beauty. Lines have been bolted on orange / brown limestone walls of supreme texture, very different from anything else found anywhere in Attika.

Climbing grades land without exception on the upper part of the scale, the easiest route being a mere 7a. This makes the crag unsuitable for many climbers; yet, stronger climbers will find routes of exceptional quality and aesthetics on vertical and slightly overhanging rock.

The difficulty of the routes and the distance from the city keep Chaos a quiet and little visited place. The crag now has more than 20 routes, plus 4 projects and many unfinished lines, although the potential for new lines has not been exhausted.

History

The place was discovered by climbers in the beginning of the previous decade and was made known by K. Roussos, D. Kozanitis, G. Benisis and N. Panagiotakopoulos who opened the first routes. After some years, V. Kastanias, C. Vrohidis, S. Konstantakopoulos and S. Kouthouris visited the place to open some additional routes.
