The Braichmelyn plays host to a hidden and historic circuit which demonstrates the development of bouldering in North Wales as well as anywhere. Finding your way, especially in summer with the bracken high and fierce, can prove tricksome but for those intrepid enough to trudge, the jewels are there to behold.
The focal point remains the Super Boulder; still worthy of the name it adopted by first ascentionists such as John Redhead back in the 1980s. However lacking the obvious appeal of other nearby crags, the sharp rock has this far resisted polishing and remains a fierce and sharp venue that will test tendons and skin alike.
In recent years, a far greater circuit has developed as locals have battled through the undergrowth to find more and more. Some was hiding in plain sight, such as the Afon Gorge located right along the pathside waiting for the right person to take its highball nature. Others require more drive but are certainly worth it. And as is often the case in North Wales, there surely remains more to be found.
