Description

Aurinkomäki in English means sunny hill and the crag is located between Kehä 3 and Sotungintie roads, near Vantaa energia power/waste management power plant. Aurinkomäki area is a big jogging park with a network of wide quality jogging roads. There all 4 climbing walls at the time making this topo. Although the whole area is not yet completely mapped and the climbing faces are somewhat apart from each other, there are at least one slab wall and another small overhang corner wall near parking lot which is still untouched.

So far Aurinkomäki crag consist of Pääseinä, Projektiseinä, Lasten släbi and Metsä walls. The rock quality varies from good to bad as in most Helsinki area crags. Pääseinä means main wall in English. It is around 4-6 meter high, depending which part of the wall you are climbing and has the most routes in Aurinkomäki crag. The highest part of the wall is red sharpish granite and the left side of the wall is gray granite with good rock quality. Projektiseinä is around 6 meters high and rock quality is fairly good. Lasten släbi and Metsä walls are around 2 to 3 meters high and have from bad to horrible rock quality. So far there are around 20 5a to 7a climbing problems.

Pääseinä is on the sun most of the day, unlike the rest of the walls which are all in the shade and because of that reason it dries fast and much faster than the others.

Approach easy going with good paths all the way to every part of the sector and approach time varies from 5 to 10 minutes depending on which part of the area you are going. Easy to access with child carriage and child friendly area overall with a epic view especially from top of the Pääseinä.

So if you feel like climbing in a quiet area with easy access, good view and a lot of easy to medium grade climbing, this would be perfect place for you.

History

History with Aurinkomäki crag is pretty much the exact same as with Puuhamaa crag. Both were scouted during low snow winter of 2019 and development started on spring of 2020 when there was excess time because of covid-19. First routes were made spring 2020, unlike Puuhamaa were first routes were opened year later spring of 2021 by my buddies Juntti Assis and Don Korlejouni.

First routes were the easy slabs on the right side of the route next to the main wall. After that routes on the main wall were climbed and little by little all the other walls were more or less fully developed during these couple of years.
