Description

Trappistes is a hidden gem of climbing located at the base of Vallée de Bagnes, just a short 10-minute drive from Martigny. This area offers a unique mix of bouldering opportunities, with a large central boulder measuring around 10m x 10m and several other boulders scattered along the river and on the path. In total, there are over 60 lines to explore, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert.

One of the best things about Trappistes is its easy accessibility. A well-maintained path leads right to the boulders, making it easy for climbers of all levels to navigate. It's also a great spot for families with kids, as the area is kid-friendly and safe for little ones to roam around.

During the winter months, Trappistes can get quite cold and humid, as it doesn't receive direct sunlight. However, in the spring, summer, and fall, it's an ideal spot to climb with comfortable temperatures and sunny skies. The area can get quite warm in the summer, so it's best to plan your visit for the morning or evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.

One thing to keep in mind when climbing at Trappistes is to be aware of the river. The level of the river can rise rapidly, so it's important to exercise caution when exploring the boulders near the water. That being said, the river also adds a unique element to the climbing experience, with the soothing sound of rushing water in the background. (and the road...)

Overall, Trappistes is an excellent destination for climbers looking to challenge themselves while immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the Swiss Alps. With easy accessibility and a variety of climbing opportunities, it's a must-visit spot for any climbing enthusiast.

History

In the early days of Trappistes, local climbers from the valley were the ones who started to climb on the main boulder. However, in the early 2000s, François Nicole completed the first ascent of Orphée 8A/+. This achievement brought more attention to Trappistes and helped to establish it as a climbing destination.

After François Nicole's ascent, Nils Favre opened a few new boulders next to the river, further expanding Trappistes. Today, Trappistes is a well-established climbing area which is worth a visit!
