Description

The Rottach area consists of a large number of little conglomerate walls and blocks scattered across the mountainside between Rottach and Gindels. The distribution of climbs here is not as dense as on the nearby walls around Freidorf and Untermaiselstein, but instead you are rewarded by a more quiet and peaceful forest setting.

The boulders face west and are mostly located under heavy forest canopy, which means little sun any time of the year. However, each wall seems to have its own little microclimate, and decent conditions can be found almost any day of the year. Some climbs stay dry even during heavy rain (eg Treppenwand), others are great on sunny winter days (Quellblock) and many are pretty much always in the shade and therefore climbable even when it's hot.

Rock quality is very variable, from great and solid with unique pebble shapes to very fragile and always dusty.

History

Most climbs here were cleaned and climbed first by Harald and Ulrich Röker around 2005-2007. However, climbing here started earlier than that, and some boulders were already cleaned when they arrived. Since then the pace of development has slowed down considerably and despite some more potential, not many new boulders were reported.

Rottach

Climbing has been limited!

1) Special rules at this crag
Blocks 28-31 (Plattler / Basthart / Hohle Gasse) are closed for climbing due to nesting birds starting 01. January every year. The end of the closure is variable and usually communicated online (check blocheart.de or all-climb.de).
The other blocks can be accessed all year. Do not walk over the fields to access the boulders.

2) How to drive to the crag and parking instructions
From Kempten, exit the B19 at Martinszell. Drive through the village and turn right towards Rottach. Shortly after the village there is a free parking lot on the right in a curve.
From Sonthofen, exit the B19 at Immenstadt Ost/Rettenberg/Burgberg. At the roundabout turn left towards Kempten/Rottach. Shortly before Rottach there is a parking lot on the left in a curve.

3) How to reach the sectors on foot
Follow the street towards Rottach and then turn right towards the forest at the first farming road for Sector A. Follow the street away from Rottach and then turn left towards the forest at the first farming road for Sector B. There is a path all along the edge of the forest, so moving between boulders is easy. For the upper boulders (Hohle Gasse etc), follow the little path right before Treppenwand to the left.
