Description

The climbing site includes 4 main sections :
- "La Dalle du Fou" is the main wall just left of the entrance of the quarry
- Just left of it, first at the same level then higher via wooden stairs , you have another wall "La Dalle du Graal"
- From a terrace above the wooden stairs, you find a cable then iron rungs leading to "La Dalle à Loulou"
- "Le Sanctuaire" about 100 m left following the path that is blocked by boulders to prevent access by cars.
After 50 m you arrive in an opening with a obvious slab on your right, there is the last part of the Iron trail ending with an abseil (20 m). No route but a possibility to train belay at an edge easily accessible at about 5 m high ( (ADA Beach - Abbaye D'Aulne , the famous local beer).
Just before the curve, you have the descent path coming from an open valley on your right.

You also have a via ferrata (iron trail) departing at the sanctuaire (left part of the wall). When arriving at the top of le Sanctuaire, follow the cables to the right to a double cable (tyrolienne), fix the dubble catrol on the left cable and the 2 carabiners of your cable kit on the right cable (pull the carabiners down to slower your speed and arrive gently against the arrival wall. Continue the cable route to the right to arrive to the small cliff between the sanctuaire and the main cliff. Follow the cable to the right to the belay where you can abseil down (20 m high) or follow the cable up and to the left to arrive at the summit from where you can follow a path on your left leading to the top of the sanctuaire. You just have to faollow the path down then left to the main cliff.

History

The first climbing on this site occured in the years 1980 in the Sanctuaire as the quarry was using the place under la dalle du fou for storing stones and gravel before they were transported out by truck or boat. The buttom of the slab was much higher than today. It is only when the quarry didn't use this area anymore that the place was cleaned up and the 35 m high of la Dalle du Fou were open to climbing. Most of the routes were then opened by Jacques Vrancken and a quatuor Claude Ancion, Jean-Marie Castiaux, Vincent Carlier and Eddy Michaux. A first topo was then made in 1990. Begin of years 2000, members of the Belgian Alpine Club of Hainaut (the brothers Jean and Louis-Marie Delin, Jacques Douchamps, Martial Grislin and Miche Sébille) clean the different sectors and replace the old equipment. The local group of speleologists "les Sus-Pendus" install the via ferrata departing at the left portion of le Sanctuaire. In 2013 Jacques Douchamps creates the "GRAAL" (Groupe de Ré-équipement et Aménagement Alpin de Landelies) to take care of the climbing site. In 2014 a new cable and new anchorages are placed for the iron trail. Later new bolts were placed in the side walls (Dalle du Graal, Dalle à Loulou) and the routes in Le Sanctuaire.

The area is access sensitive!

The cliff is private property of the limestone quarry just behind the cliff. The Belgian Alpine Club has a convention with the owner to be allowed to climb on the cliff. It also has the necessary permits from the local authorities.
As for all belgian cliffs, you must be member of the Belgian Alpine Club or the Klim and Bergsport Federatie to be allowed to climb on this site. Members of other Alpine Clubs, member of UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) are also authorized if they can show their active membershipcard and if they are covered by a valid liability insurance.
Control of the membership takes very often place by the CAB local representative.
Parking along the road at the hill side- beware to let space enough for trucks coming to and out of the quarry.

BE AWARE that the quarry is still active and during the week there can be mine blasting during the day (9 to 16). There is a warning by siren sounds.
Camping and fire places are not authorized.
