We landed in the Jurassic landscape just south of Rovereto city, where the Orme dei Dinosauri crag lies. This captivating destination boasts yellow-gray limestone walls overlooking the Orme dei Dinosauri park, a protected area renowned for its dinosaur footprints.
This is the realm of vertical face climbing, where finger strength, balance and a mastery of footwork reign. For the overhanging lovers, there are some sections of the walls that have steep exits. The grading scale is a bit old school, expect sandbagged lines.
Divided into three sectors, Orme dei Dinosauri offers nearly 40 lines to explore.
• Sector A has accessible routes, ranging from 5b to 6b on gray walls.
• Sector B has some great short slab routes on the left and the true difficulties on the right, with overhanging walls offering routes up to 8c. Here there are also a couple of projects that can be freely climbed.
• Sector C has various offerings: compact slabs and vertical gray walls, having both easy and difficult lines.
Optimal climbing conditions grace Orme dei Dinosauri during Spring and Autumn, when the walls are completely dry and the wind from Garda lake blows strong. Winter, following periods of scant rainfall, also presents favorable opportunities, thanks to the crag's southern exposure.
The environment is really peaceful and the crag is never busy. Even if routes are a bit dated, the friction is still very good.
Approach to this hidden sector is a bit long for the Arco’s standards, but the road is mainly flat and comfortable.
A visit to the Orme dei Dinosauri park is an absolute must, offering not only free exploration but also guided tours during Spring or Autumn, led by the knowledgeable staff of the Rovereto Civic Museum Foundation. Siamo atterrati nel paesaggio giurassico a sud della città di Rovereto, dove si trova la falesia Orme dei Dinosauri. È costituita da pareti in calcare giallo-grigio che si affacciano su un'area protetta, rinomata per la presenza di molte impronte di dinosauri.
Questo è il regno dell'arrampicata su parete verticale, dove la forza di dita, l'equilibrio e un buon uso dei piedi regnano sovrani. Anche gli amanti delle pareti strapiombanti hanno qualcosa su cui divertirsi, con alcune uscite fisiche e di resistenza. La scala di difficoltà è un po' vecchio stile, quindi aspettatevi vie un po' sottostimate (“sandbagged”).
Diviso in tre settori, Orme dei Dinosauri offre quasi 40 vie.
• Il settore A ha vie più facili, con gradi che vanno dal 5b al 6b su pareti grigie e molto lavorate.
• Il settore B ha alcune belle vie su placca sul lato sinistro e le vere difficoltà sul destro, con pareti strapiombanti che offrono vie fino all'8c. Qui ci sono anche un paio di progetti che possono essere scalati liberamente.
• Il settore C offre varie proposte: placche compatte e pareti grigie verticali, con linee sia facili che difficili.
Le condizioni ottimali per l'arrampicata alle Orme dei Dinosauri sono la primavera e l'autunno, quando le pareti sono completamente asciutte e il vento dal lago di Garda soffia forte. Anche l'inverno, dopo periodi di scarsa pioggia, è un buon periodo, grazie all'esposizione sud della parete.
L'ambiente è davvero tranquillo e mai affollato. Anche se le vie sono un po' datate, la roccia non è unta e il grip è molto buono.
L'approccio a questo settore è un po' più lungo rispetto agli standard di Arco, ma la strada è principalmente pianeggiante e comoda.
Una visita al parco delle Orme dei Dinosauri è da non perdere. L’esplorazione è libera e gratuita, ma c’è anche la possibilità di organizzare visite guidate durante la primavera o l'autunno con il personale della Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto.
