Description

Many smaller and bigger sectors stacked along the shoreline makes this a scenic crag. The rock is like most of the good gneiss around the western part of Norway though maybe most comparable to Flatanger, particularly "Storveggen", which has some of the best climbing in all of Norway.

All of the crags dry very quickly after rain, "Storveggen" in particluar as it has little vegetation above and is quite steep.

Conditions are best if the wind is from the west, particularly on the harder climbing on Storveggen. This is a paradox as westernly winds usually means that a wet front is coming in from the sea. However, before the wet front hits land then westernly winds and no rain may coexist. In the morning it can be moist in some of the steeper sectors regardless of wind, so afternoon is to prefer, when the sun comes around. Mosquitos may be an issue after midsummer, but only on days with little wind.

History

Climbing at Kvitnes started around the 90's with Kasper Kotake being the front figure for the harder climbing, establishing "This is my church", "Lycklig", "Temple of Love" and "Normalitetsfobi" all on trad. Other main figures include Frank Rognskaug, Audun Bratrud and Eirik Rosvoll, they have contributed with high quality routes throughout the 2000's. In later years, Tasio Pino have made sure to bolt some amazing projects and have managed to do a few of them himself or others have come by and finished the business, such as "Nero" and "Mio Gilera" and the amazing project of "Gilera", which has not seen an ascent yet, give it a go!

On the more moderate grades, the Old Boys Team "OBT" have made sure to keep the crag in a very good state, doing cleaning and bolting work regularly with Per Magne Bae and Ivar Engdahl as front figures. They also know how to climb hard and have reversed the aging process through spending significant amounts of time at this most amazing crag.

The area surrounding the crag is rich on history, particularly from the war. The germans fortified the lighthouse clearly visible just north of the crag and the fortifications are still there today. If you need a break from the climbing this is a short walk.
