Kivisafari (eng. ”Rock Safari”) is aptly named since all the boulders and sectors are close to good forestry roads and parkings. A lot of the boulders and sectors are visible from the car so you can go on a bit of a rock and climbing safari. This also means you can climb fair amount of volume in a day because time and energy is not used on the approach. Holds and wallprofiles vary a lot depending of the sector and there is something for every taste. Some of the sectors take long time to dry and some are almost instantly dry after rain (more info coming soon). When mosquito season starts this is not the best place to be.
The development of the place is still in progress so please be patient. Be understanding if the boulders are still a bit dirty or if there is still some loose rock. Please inform the Kivisafari team ”Safari guides” if something needs our attention. We will continue to open new sectors and these will be added soon.
Right next to ”Kivisafari” sector there is a ”laavu” which is a finnish word for a kind of a hiking shelter. That means you can take an idyllic lunch break and cook on the open fire. If you are a heavy cooker please consider bringing your own fire wood with you.
Don't climb reserved projects (marked with a chalk
X). Clean your own instead, there is plenty for everyone.

The climbing potential of lilijärvi area was discovered by Wille Pulkkinen by cross-referencing multiple different maps and geological surveys while he still lived in Helsinki. Through a complete coincidence due to life events he moved to Jyväskylä. That meant that doing extensive surveys of the area became feasible. He recruited Eetu Oksanen to help him with the effort and they quickly discovered the first sectors "Silverback" and "Kivisafari" during the spring of 2025.
Stunned by the quality of the rock and the climbing they also recruited experienced climber/developers Jere Hurtig and Markus Hasla to help comb the remaining 10 square kilometers of the forest and to develop the area. Jere and Markus had been helpful in limiting the initial search by providing valuable information where historical climbing and searches had taken place (mostly in the shores of Päijänne). Over the next two weeks all the spots around the lilijärvi area were searched and the initial few lines were developed such as "Vincent van Rock", "Fortuna" and ”Punainen Lanka”.
Old school boulderers soon heard about the development and came to check out the area. They remembered that some initial scoutings had indeed taken place during the early 2000’s, but that they had discovered only a few of the sectors such as Safariportti and the swampy overhang/wall on the otherside of the road from Safariportti. One line was opened back then in the swampy overhang by Ila and possibly something on the ”Tervetuloa Safarille” -boulder but no accurate information seems to be available. The area seems to have been subsequently quickly forgotten since no significant development took place during that time.
