Description

Glasøyfjellet, a.k.a. the German Wall is one of the best crag in the region and a very good alternative to the Flatanger cave if you want more bouldery routes (aurora Borealis sector) or a less steep angle (Goldenwand) with similar great rock quality! It is located a bit lower and more sheltered then the great cave making it a great option on very cold and windy days in the fall and spring aswell as viable all through the winter on sunny days.

The climbing at Glasøyfjellet is spread out over 4 very distinct sectors with everything from short and super steep cave climbs to long technical face climbs, aswell as a lot of bouldering (this is covered in a separate guide). The season here is basically all year around with the Golden Wand sector having the best conditions in the winter half of the year, and the other sectors sharing a similar season to the Flatanger cave (summer half of the year).

There is still a lot of potential for new routes aswell as many open projects still left to climb for anyone so inclined. If you do happen to climb one of the open projects, please let us know so we can update the topo :)

History

Around 2012, Baden Würtemberg in Germany had a climbing selection team with the noble pursuit of supporting rock climbing. As a result, Tom Thudium, Alexander Förschler, Jens Rohloff, Max Räuber, Milena Krämer, Vera Saunders, Johannes Ott, Miriam Perschmann, Katinka Perschmann, Axel Perschmann, and Jochen Perschmann loaded their cars with bolts, drills, and enthusiasm and headed for Norway, divided on several trips, to establish new climbs at the same time as trying already established climbs in Flatanger. On a day the German team went fishing in Straumen they drove further into the Flatanger archipelago and saw this massive golden wall and it was clear that they just had to bolt it! The German team also developed some smaller crags around the cave the same year. However, because of the immense potential, and the lack of sending most of the routes, they returned a couple of times the following years.

The climbing community, today, benefits from their impressive effort on these beautiful walls at Glasøyfjellet. The walls are less famous than their big brother; the Hanshelleren cave, but that may just change with this topo. The team in Baden Würtemberg still exists today, and is even perhaps more relevant because of the implementation of climbing in the Olympic Games.
