Description

The climbs takes place on an overhanging limestone cliff, towering at a height of 10-15 meters. It is likely the only bolted limestone cliff in Sweden, making it a unique destination for Swedish climbers, even though the routes themselves aren't top-rated. Despite the cliff's somewhat loose appearance, it still provides a decent level of quality.

Climbing this cliff offers not only a fun challenge but also rewards climbers with great views of the surrounding ocean from the top. The routes itself is known for its enjoyable and pump-inducing nature, keeping climbers engaged throughout the climbs even though they isn't that long.

If you happen to find yourself on Gotland, this limestone cliff is worth a visit, but probably don't come just for the climbing.

History

Cultural History:
The name Galgberget derives from its gallows located at the top. It is believed to have been built as early as the 13th century and is today Scandinavia's oldest standing medieval gallows. The gallows is surrounded by a circular stone wall, approximately one meter high and one meter wide, measuring 16 meters in diameter. Inside the wall, there are three limestone block pillars, standing about six meters tall. Archaeological excavations in the area reveal that several of the individuals who were executed were also buried here. The placement of the gallows had a deterrent effect, as those who were hanged could be seen from both Visby and the sea.
