Description

Costiera is definitely one of Trieste's highlights. The crag is situated along the coastal road between Trieste and Sistiana, at only 20 minutes drive from the centre of Trieste.

The climbing is on limestone of high quality which is featured with tufas, pockets and crimps. Although some routes may be a bit polished, the climbing is great. The best season go is autumn, spring and sunny winter days. Given the walls orientation you can feel like summer climbing even in the deepest winter. Belaying however, is mostly in the shade. If it's too hot, or after climbing, you can follow the path down to the beach below and have a refreshing dip into the sea.
We wouldn't recommend this crag with children. Although the cliffbase is relatively good most of the times, the approach includes a small ladder and ferrata to get down.

Besides the climbing, the view of the Gulf of Trieste and the Adriatic sea is breathtaking, don't forget to take it in while climbing! Even Though the coastal road is just next to the crag, you can barely hear it and whatever you still hear is forgotten as soon as you hear the waves bashing to the rocks.

Interesting to know is that the gallery/tunnel is a natural formation!

History

Climbing in Costiera goes quite a while back, but all routes have been rebolted in recent years.
The right sector is a modern addition from the rebolting teams.
