Description

Anyone who goes to Capo Pecora can’t help but be fascinated by the colors and shapes of the rocks, so shaped and tapered by the wind and water. Imagine climbers, always looking for vertical and captivating cliffs to test their technique and cool-headedness.

Less than 30 minutes from the parking lot, through a charming landscape dominated by nature, lies one of the most beloved (and photographed) climbing areas in all of Sardinia. In any season of the year, the cliffs are frequented by climbers from all over Europe, who come with their backpacks filled with ropes, harnesses, and various climbing gear. Besides the sea and the beaches, the rocks have their followers as well.

While Sardinia is known to climbers for its tall limestone cliffs, Capo Pecora is a hidden little paradise for granite climbing. Unlike limestone climbing walls, which are equipped with steel protections, those at Capo Pecora have been preserved in their natural state, dedicating the area to “clean” climbing, meaning with only removable protections (Friends and Nuts).

Climbing at Capo Pecora began in the late 90s, when local climbers attempted to scale the many granite blocks scattered above the cliffs. Curious about the precipices found below this area, some of them found a way to reach the sea and climb those tall walls, using the many cracks that allow for ascent and placement of protection.

Today, the cliffs of Capo Pecora boast over 60 registered climbing routes, with plenty of opportunities for further development. Many specialized magazines have dedicated articles to this area, with large double-page photographs, often capturing the rocks and the sea just before sunset.

In short, Capo Pecora has all the ingredients to be appreciated. Finding yourself at the end of the day, staring at the rocks turning orange and then red, is, if nothing else, a great excuse to confirm the love that both Sardinians and tourists have for this island.
