Bronkies Climbing Area – Gauteng, South Africa
Bronkhorstspruit Gorge, affectionately known as Bronkies, is one of Gauteng’s most popular sport climbing crags, offering a beautiful riverside setting just an hour or so drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The cliffs are made of solid quartzite, with well-bolted routes that suit a wide range of grades, making it an ideal destination for both beginner and seasoned climbers.
Wall Orientation & Sun:
The main climbing wall faces south west and sits alongside the Bronkhorstspruit River, meaning it gets full shade for most of the day. This makes Bronkies a coldish crag in winter, with comfortable climbing conditions even on cold days. In summer, the wall can get hot—an early start or late afternoon session is recommended, and the nearby trees provide some welcome shade between burns.
There is Verreaux's Eagles (Black Eagles) nesting at Bronkies. During breeding season (April to August) it is restricted to climb routes close to the used nest. The closure extent is clearly marked at the first bolt of the first and last climb closed, and updated every year.
Best Time to Visit:
Winter (May–August): Prime season, with the wall bathed in shade, dry days and crisp mornings—perfect friction and comfortable climbing temps.
Spring & Autumn (March–April, September–October): Pleasant weather with moderate temperatures, though early afternoons can be warm.
Summer (November–February): Hot in the midday sun; climb early or late to avoid the heat. Expect the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Sun on the wall just before the afternoon starts.
