Rock Climbing in Östersund, Sweden
When we refer to Östersund in this guide, we mean the broader region within roughly an hour’s drive of the town. This area offers a rich variety of climbing opportunities and rock types, making it a rewarding destination for climbers of all levels. Most climbing areas are located in the scenic forests of Jämtland, where you can leave behind the noise of traffic and fully immerse yourself in nature. Östersund is known for its diverse range of grades. Climbing here often involves crimps and jugs, but you’ll also encounter slopers and the occasional pocket. The landscape varies from coastal areas to dense boreal forest. Depending on the season, you might find an abundance of berries and mushrooms—or, at times, swarms of mosquitoes. The best times to visit are from mid-April to June, and from late August to September. Spring is typically sunny and dry, while autumn tends to be dry but noticeably colder. Approaches are generally short, and most boulders are easy to locate. Landings are often good, and in many cases, one large crash pad is sufficient. All sit starts are done from one pad unless otherwise mentioned in the description. ⸻ General Guidelines for All Areas • Leave no trace. Take all trash with you and remove any tick marks after climbing. • Respect parking instructions. Most crags have designated parking areas—please use them and avoid blocking roads. • Be mindful of nature. We are guests in these forests—treat the surroundings with care and respect. Climb with humility. Prioritize safety, respect for the rock, and personal growth over performance or ego. Avoid unnecessary brushing, chipping, or manufacturing of holds. Not every climb needs to be sent—some are better left for another day.
